Two AVHS senior earn high honors

The Band Director is pleased to announce (if you have not already heard) that a VERY prestigious honor was bestowed upon two of our senior band members on Tuesday of this week....

Some background: The Music Educators National Conference (The National Association for Music Educators in the U.S.) and the United States Army sponsor the All-American Bowl each year which brings the nations finest high school athletes together for a professional Bowl Game. Incidentally this event televised nationally on NBC.

Three years ago the organizations began the "All-American Marching Band". Members are selected through nominations from their high school director (students are nominated their junior year for placement in the band during their senior year of high school). Auditions consist of academic screening, a rigorous audition process, and a thorough interview process.

THOUSANDS of applicants are screened but only 97 students are selected from the entire United States. Last year from the State of Nevada, TWO students were selected to participate in this band. This year, TWO students from Arbor View High School Band were selected to participate!!!!

Please congratulate Patrick Montgomery (snare drum) and Steven Spendlove (horn/mellophone) on their selection to particpate in the 2010 Army All American Marching Band!!! Both young men are model students and consistently serve as models to their peers.

Steven and Patrick will spend a week in San Antonio, Texas (ALL expenses paid through MENC and the U.S. Army) in January to meet with the other 95 selectees, where they will prepare a halftime show to be perfomed on national television at the All-American Bowl Game. This is THE pinnacle of the high school marching band experience! We are very fortunate two have two students selected when MOST high schools in the U.S. have none. I think this speaks volumes about the work ethic of our students and the standards we are setting as a program. In just a few years time we have moved from a floundering program to one sending students to the very best programs in the nation.

Justin Klarers is in the process of nominating current juniors for this award in 2011. Please let him know if you are interested in this opportunity!

Again, congratulations to Steven and Patrick for their accomplishments, and a reminder to us ALL that hard work really does pay off!

Congratulations to the following:

A couple of congrats are in order:

CONGRATS to our awesome Arbor View Band Members, who completed their first summer of Drum Corps International competition.

These students were away from home, working 12 hours a day to perfect their shows with Legends Drum and Bugle Corps for over two months! I had the privilege of attending finals in Indianapolis and to say that their efforts paid off is an understatement!

Special Congrats to Legends (and AVHS Bands) members:

Liz McAllister
Patrick Montgomery
Brandon Satterthwaite
Courtney Satterthwaite
Chris Simko
Austin Taylor

CONGRATS to Mr. Ibe Sodawalla, Executive Director for Legends Drum and Bugle Corps and staff member and arranger for Arbor View Bands for being selected at the Drum Corps International Open Class DIRECTOR OF THE YEAR AWARD!

This is an unprecedented honor and we are fortunate to have someone of Ibe's caliber working with our program! WE ARE PROUD OF YOU!

Sincerely,

Justin Klarer, Director of Bands
